A forum for people who suffer from chronic or persistent coughs to share ideas... these don't have any sort of official approval so you try any of them out at your own risk. I've consigned some of the more unusual ones I received to the Oddities bin on the left. I've also listed very simple remedies separately. If you're a sufferer, good luck, and please report back by commenting on the particular posting if you find success. Or just comment to the most recent posting and I will pick it up.

The cough is easing off!

To Morven, and anyone else who's interested.... the morphine is definitely helping. I've been taking 10 mg. twice a day for the last week, and the coughing has eased during the day and evening. It's such a huge relief, though I'm not convinced that it's actually curing it. I still cough a lot in the morning so it feels like it's still lurking. But maybe I just need to allow time for my system to settle back to normal?
Something else that's also helping is that I've cut down my alcohol consumption quite a lot. That's partly to do with not wanting to mix drugs and alcohol too much, but I have also found that the less alcohol I have, the better chance I have of a good night's sleep.
Anyway, life's definitely taken a turn for the better, and I'm about to go and spend Christmas and New Year in Thailand so that will be another boost for my physical and mental well being!
Merry Christmas to all who've shared in my blog.

Hi Nick, glad to hear you've found some relief and are sleeping better. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I think the morphine may be masking symptoms rather than curing anything (I may be wrong of course, I am sometimes lol)

A Happy Christmas and New Year to you and yours. Hope you have a good (and relatively cough-free) holiday.

Would like to get in touch with Mr Peake if possible to talk about this problem as my mother in law is suffering from the same and she would like to know if he has a hiatus hernia? as she and 2 of her family have the same cough and all 3 have a hernia.....

I have just dicovered your blog and feel heartened to hear experiences from other cough sufferers. I'm really glad the morphine is having an effect, but I write to tell you my experiences of using opiates to stop a chronic cough (10 plus years and counting). I took dihydrocodeine tartrate tablets (another opiate) for a period of around 4 years. The effect on my cough at first was nothing short of miraculous; it really gave me my life back. However I did develop a tollerance of the tablets and so they became significantly less effective with time. I was then faced with the choice of increasing the dose or leaving off the tablets. As I was on quite a high dose already (2 x 65mg per day) I took the latter option as I didn't want to develop a dependance. It was actually quite difficult to wean off the tablets (so I had already developed a dependance as it turns out). Now unfortunately I am pretty well back to where I started, with a cough that I just cannot get rid of. I am not saying don't go down that route - the period of no / significantly less coughing was fantastic - just be aware it is a side effect of opiates and not a cure. Best of luck and I look forward to dropping in the blog in the hope that something someone else has tried will offer some relief!
